Traveling with pets. Mission Impossible?

Many people often wonder how difficult it would be to travel with their furry friends. Although the task may seem daunting, it doesn’t always have to be. If you’re properly informed, traveling with your pet can be easier than finding your luggage in baggage claim!
Unfortunately, if you don’t have a small dog or small cat, your pet will most likely be traveling as checked baggage or cargo! Certain airlines do, however, allow small animals in the cabins under certain circumstances. It is obviously recommended that you call your specific airline for their updated rules and regulations on this matter. Here are some simple tips on flying with your buddy:
- Make sure you have proper identification both on the pet and in/on the crate itself
- Have a leash available to walk him/her prior to entering the airport. Do not let your pet out of the crate once in an airport
- Make arrangements with your airline and your destination hotels/accommodations PRIOR to arriving! Airlines usually reserve the right to refuse travel if there are already too many pets on the flight
- Do not restrain or muzzle your pet inside of the crate. This can be very dangerous during flight, as you will not be able to check on their well-being once they’ve been loaded into the cargo area
- Consult your veterinarian about safe and mild sedatives to help your pet have a more relaxed flight. This type travel can be very stressful to any type of animal (including you, the owner!)
- Make sure your crate is large enough for your pet – with ventilation and room to breath! He/she should be able to sit, stand, turn around, and lie down without too much effort
Next, you’ll have to address the requirements of your destination country. If you’re traveling within your home country, you probably won’t have to worry about this part. Many countries require a bit more prep work: Vaccination documentation, micro-chipping (required in a few countries), and some still even require a period of quarantine for your furry friend. Just remember, if you’re traveling to certain countries, you will need to prepare up to 6 months ahead of time (depending what requirements and restrictions that country may have), but many times, it is not this difficult. Here is a pretty extensive list of countries and their requirements concerning pet travel. Just make sure you do your research and double check everything at least a week prior to departure! Safe travels!

I have only traveled with a pet once before, about 15 years ago, and it was a nightmare. I can’t imagine what she was thinking when she was locked in the cargo area! Anyways, I was surprised to see how easy it is to bring a dog/cat to different countries.
Yep, I had heard that a lot more countries used to require periods of quarantine. Not something I would even consider with my two dogs.
