Enjoy Greek Culture – Sunny, Pleasant and Calm Crete
Greece is one of the most fascinating destinations to visit. It offers exotic beaches, history and traditional cuisine. When you visit Greece, you may come to realize why Greek people are full of imagination and have such rich literature.
Greece has more than 6000 picturesque islands and islets. Only 200 of these are occupied, of which only seventy islands have more than 100 people living. When you prepare to visit Greece make sure that you are ready for a wonderful amount of travel time surrounded by sea. The climate is moderate and sunny. One of the most beautiful times of year to visit is during the month of August, when most of Greece is generally clear, and you can really see why people call it “Sunny Crete”. However, it is not an overly hot climate and is quite manageable.
Our choice of the numerous places to visit in Greece was Crete – the lovely largest Greek island located in the Mediterranean Sea. Of the major islands Lesbos and Rhodes, Crete is highly populated and I was curious to visit this place to get to know the people, life and culture. The Crete people have high regard for their country and consider Crete as separate culture different from Mainland Greece. Crete is an ideal place to visit for culture and historical tourism. The island offers many ancient treasures to the visitors who want to learn about their ancestors and the great civilization called the Minoan civilization.
Crete’s landscape is surrounded by hills, mountains, historical ruins, and picturesque monasteries. Even though Crete contributed a great deal to the world’s civilization and
culture, the life of the people is poor. The economy mostly depends on fishing, tourism, and farming activities. However, Crete does not fail leisure travelers and offers some of the best vacation experiences to the people who visit her. One of the first things you have to do in Crete is to identify a good ferry to travel from one island to another. The ferry companies do not have much facility to support the travelers and even less care about their time table.
Iraklio is the capital of Crete, and offers many historical places to visit. You won’t want to miss the Venetian fort, Rocco al Mare, and the fishing harbor. The Venetian fort was built during the Byzantine Empire and the fort has been rebuilt a number of times. The fort was restored to some extent and it has a little chapel inside. Rocco al Mare is a historical village and offers a ton of information about the historical civilization and culture. You can spend some quality time roaming around the small towns, and it is worth the visit to the open air museum. Though some may not think Crete has much to offer its visitors, it is an amazing place to see, live and relax. Bike rental is also available to help you get around, and if you have time you can visit a small village called Argyroupolis, my favorite destination. One important aspect that you can appreciate and enjoy is the Cretan cuisine. The people claim that their food is a pattern of healthy diet and reports the least amount of heart attacks and health problems, in the Mediterranean region. Enjoy the culture!

Decent article on Crete. I had a wonderful time here, back in 2006, and look forward to my next trip. I would also suggest visiting Ios and Santorini, as they made for a relaxing 2-4 day stay, each. Incidentally, I love the 2 photos you’ve included in this article! The one of Ios is quite nostalgic!
Great short article – since I hadn’t written a Travel Report on Greece yet, I was glad to include 2 of my favorite pics in this article. Thanks for the article submission, Shyam!
I had a chance to stay on Crete for 3 months last year and loved it! The best advice I can give is to rent a scooter to get you around… inexpensive and very convenient (and great air conditioning
)!
The largest of the Greek islands, Crete has all the attributes for a great holiday experience with the added attraction of some of the world’s most famous and intriguing archaeological sites. We stayed at the Candia Park Village ( http://www.stayincrete.gr/web/content/view/151/490/lang,en/ ) last June, it’s a wonderful hotel, we had a room at the front with both sea & pool view, would highly reccomend it! The people there make the difference as so friendly, this resort is beautiful and it has great beaches, also some peaceful ones. Enjoy your stay in Crete, it’s a magical island.
